Krya Midnight Black: a deep indigo hair dye made entirely from Ayurvedic herbs
If you’ve been avoiding colouring your greying hair because you’re worried about PPD, ammonia or harsh synthetic black dyes, Krya Midnight Black offers a truly herbal alternative.
Krya Midnight Black is a single‑step indigo hair dye made entirely from Ayurvedic herbs. No synthetic dyes. No PPD. No ammonia. No peroxide. No resorcinol. No metallic salts. Just whole herbs that colour your hair naturally while helping improve shine, strength and scalp comfort over time.
Compared to warmer brown‑black herbal shades, Midnight Black contains a higher proportion of indigo to create a deeper, cooler black tone with minimal warm undertones.
How is this different from regular “herbal” or indigo hair dye?
Many “herbal” black hair dyes on the market combine a synthetic dye base with a small amount of herbs for marketing. Others use low‑quality indigo powders that give uneven colour, dryness or poor grey coverage.
Krya Midnight Black contains no synthetic dye base whatsoever.
Every ingredient in the formula is a whole herb selected to improve colour depth, colour uptake and scalp health:
-
Indigo provides the rich cool black pigment and deeper indigo‑black tone.
-
Henna helps bind the colour to the hair shaft while improving strength and shine.
-
Hibiscus supports softness and helps reduce dryness during colouring.
-
Ratanjot helps deepen the final shade while calming scalp irritation.
-
Cloves help improve colour uptake and natural gloss.
-
Khadira supports scalp balance and helps improve colour richness.
-
Babool gum helps improve colour binding and conditioning.
Because these herbs work together, your hair does not just look coloured — it feels softer, smoother, fuller and healthier with regular use.
Why Krya processes its own indigo instead of buying ready‑made indigo powder
Many brands selling “natural” or “herbal” black hair dye quietly add PPD or synthetic dye boosters to improve colour intensity and grey coverage.
Even supposedly “pure” indigo powders available online are often contaminated with synthetic dyes, metallic salts or chemical additives.
This is why Krya does not rely on generic commodity indigo powder.
We source indigo leaves ourselves and process them carefully in‑house to create a genuinely pure indigo hair dye free from PPD, metallic salts and synthetic colourants.
Indigo is actually one of the most difficult Ayurvedic colouring herbs to process well. The leaves contain tiny thorn‑like fibres that quickly embed into the skin during grinding and handling. During production, fine indigo pigment settles everywhere — even our ceilings and fans temporarily turn a soft blue‑purple during processing.
But we continue to process indigo this way because it allows us to maintain purity, freshness and quality control at every stage instead of relying on pre‑processed commercial powders of unknown origin.
The result is a cleaner, more reliable indigo hair dye that colours effectively while remaining gentle on the scalp and hair shaft.
A gentler way to colour greying hair
Synthetic black dyes often prioritise immediate colour intensity at the expense of scalp comfort and long‑term hair health. Many rely on PPD, ammonia, peroxide or metallic salts that can trigger irritation, dryness or hair damage over time.
Krya Midnight Black works differently.
This Ayurvedic indigo hair dye colours hair gradually and naturally while helping support healthier‑looking hair with regular use. Because the formula is made entirely from whole herbs, hair often feels better conditioned, smoother and glossier after colouring instead of dry or rough.
The colour is semi‑permanent and develops beautifully over 24–48 hours after rinsing, settling into a rich cool black shade that looks softer and more natural than flat synthetic black dyes.
For people looking for a deeper indigo‑black result in a single‑step format — without PPD, ammonia or resorcinol — Midnight Black offers a cleaner and more thoughtful approach to colouring grey hair.
How to Use Krya Midnight Black Indigo Hair Dye
First time using an indigo hair dye? Don’t worry — the process is simple, and results improve with each use. Unlike synthetic black dyes that rely on aggressive dye chemistry, Ayurvedic hair colour builds colour gradually while supporting healthier‑looking hair over time.
Because Midnight Black contains a higher proportion of indigo, it gives a deeper, cooler black tone compared to warmer brown‑black herbal shades.
Step 1 – Prepare your hair
-
Your hair must be clean, oil‑free and free of product buildup for the colour to bind properly.
-
Oil your hair generously and wash it well before applying colour. You can do this either the day before or on the day of colouring.
-
Use a Krya Hair Wash or a very gentle sulphate‑free cleanser to remove oil and buildup without drying out the hair. If your scalp becomes oily or sweaty again after washing, re‑wash before applying the colour.
-
Allow your hair to dry completely before application.
Step 2 – Prepare the colour paste
-
Mix the powder with clean, cool water to form a thick, smooth, non‑drippy paste — similar to pancake batter consistency.
-
Do not use hot water or acidic liquids; indigo works best with cool or room‑temperature water.
-
Indigo releases colour quickly once mixed with water, so apply the paste immediately and ideally within 15–20 minutes for best results.
Step 3 – Apply evenly
-
Section your hair and apply the paste generously from root to tip, ensuring all greys are fully covered.
-
Pay special attention to resistant grey areas like the temples and hairline — load slightly more product here and press the paste in gently with gloved fingers or a brush.
-
Check carefully in a mirror to ensure there are no missed patches or uncovered strands.
Step 4 – Leave on for 1–2 hours
-
Wrap your hair with a shower cap immediately after application. Natural indigo hair dye works best when kept moist and warm — once the paste dries out completely, colour development slows down.
-
Allow the colour to sit for 1–2 hours.
-
For stronger grey coverage and a deeper indigo‑black tone, leave it on closer to 2 hours.
Step 5 – Rinse (no shampoo)
-
Rinse thoroughly using plain cool or lukewarm water until the water runs clear.
-
Do not use shampoo at this stage; shampoo can interfere with how the dye binds to the hair shaft.
Step 6 – Allow the colour to oxidise naturally
-
The colour continues to deepen naturally over the next 24–48 hours as the indigo oxidises and binds to the hair shaft.
-
Avoid shampooing during this period.
-
Immediately after rinsing, the colour may look slightly lighter, bluish or greenish on some grey strands — this is normal. The final cool black shade develops gradually over the next 1–2 days.
Step 7 – Post‑colour care
-
After 24 hours, use the Krya Hair Colour Hair Mask as your first post‑colour treatment. This helps improve colour binding, reduce dryness and deepen colour longevity.
-
Follow with a suitable Krya Hair Oil and Hair Wash routine to keep hair conditioned and colour‑safe.
Step 8 – Maintain your colour
To maintain colour depth and hair health:
-
Oil your hair and scalp generously before every wash using a suitable Krya Hair Oil based on your hair type.
-
Wash using the Krya Conditioning Hair Wash or another suitable Krya Hair Wash from our range.
-
Avoid harsh shampoos, clarifying shampoos and excessive heat styling, which can accelerate indigo fade.
-
Reapply every 3–4 weeks depending on hair growth and grey coverage needs.
During the first few applications, colour may fade slightly faster. Regular use improves colour depth, longevity and overall grey coverage as the dye builds up gently layer by layer. For highly resistant greys or if you want an even darker black result, you can occasionally alternate with Krya Madyantika — our pure henna‑based tint. Building a stronger henna base gives indigo more surface to bind to over time, improving depth and longevity, especially around very resistant grey roots.

Our formulation approach
Each herb is sourced as a whole raw material and processed in‑house using traditional Ayurvedic methods.
Because indigo is highly prone to contamination with synthetic dyes and metallic salts and is difficult to process correctly, we source and process indigo leaves ourselves instead of relying on generic commodity powders.
We do not use extracts, fillers, preservatives, fragrance, silicones, detergents, synthetic dyes, metallic salts or hidden colour boosters — only whole, traditionally processed herbs.
All 7 ingredients are fully declared — nothing is hidden under “base”, “colour blend” or proprietary mixes.
